David Stoecklein launched his photography career by taking lifestyle shots of skiing, fishing, hiking, and biking, landing assignments for companies such as Coca-Cola, Ski Magazine, L.L. Bean, Reebok, Timberland, and Scientific Angler. It was not long, however, before he turned his lens to his neighbors on the great ranches of the West.

David’s fascination with the ranching heritage of the American West led him to befriend, and subsequently photograph, the men and women still breathing life into the mythical figure of the cowboy. David’s passion for preserving the traditions and beliefs of the country’s honest, hard-working cowboys and cowgirls gradually earned him their respect. With that respect came an open invitation to share in their lives, and the great responsibility to honor their trust.

Stoecklein Photography houses an extensive stock collection encompassing both lifestyle and western images. In addition, Dave owned a gallery of fine art prints and western memorabilia in Ketchum, Idaho. Stoecklein Publishing produces an annual line of western calendars and datebooks as well as a series of western coffee-table books.

Dave Stoecklein is one of the “Accomplished Master Photographers” in Canon’s “Explorers of Light” education and inspiration program. For the past four years, he has been recognized by the editors of True West magazine as the “Best Living Photographer of the West.” The distinguished award is given each year as part of the magazine’s “Best of the West” issue.

David Stoecklein resided in Idaho with his wife, Mary, and their three sons, Drew, Taylor, and Colby, where they would  split their time between their home in Sun Valley, Idaho and their ranch in Mackay, Idaho.

David Stoecklein  was 65 years old when he died on November 10, 2014 at a local hospital.

Many of Stoecklein’s photographs can be seen on the Valley Vet catalog and many other magazines as well. So, the next time you flip though a horse magazine, you might want to check out who is the cover artist, it may be one of David’s!

Here are some quotes from long time fans.

“Dave was an artist and iconic photographer who proved, time and time again, that a picture was worth a thousand words — and many times his were worth TEN thousand!”

“I met Dave when I took his photo course at his ranch. Such a classy man. My sympathy to his wife and family. The world has lost a shining light of talent not to mention an incredibly warm and loving person.”

“David was absolutely one of the best and is still an inspiration to me today. He truly was a pioneer in the industry.”

“We are severely saddened by David’s passing. We were just visiting his studio during the traliing of the sheep festival and had a nice visit with him. We have always enjoyed his work and hope his children will continue his incredible legacy.”

It would be great if his sons continued…  we hope more chapters in  the David  Stoecklein legacy~

See you this Friday,

Shya

Huh? What? Well, I will believe that when I see flying Shetlands !
